Growing up my hair was always a disaster. To paint a picture in your mind; As a little girl my Mom always kept my hair cut short, and I was often referred to as “Shirley Temple.” I have vivid memories of my Stepdad getting me ready for school and doing his best to smooth a hairbrush through my snarled hair while I had tears in my eyes. I swear that sometimes I can still feel the pain in my scalp! Having a ball of poofy, snarled ringlets on my head taught me to resent my curls. It didn’t matter how many women told me how beautiful they were. I did not see beauty, I saw hassle.
In middle school, before learning what a flat iron was (or how to work one) I washed my hair every morning and wore it natural to school. By now it was about shoulder length which helped to loosen the ringlets, but it was still really poofy. I tried tons and tons of products. I would scrunch it full of gel and eventually started to straighten just my bangs in the morning – you ALL know the look that I’m talking about. Feeling helpless, I gave up and would just start wearing it up every single day with one of those skinny athletic headbands to keep the flyaways back. Eventually this started to create even more flyaways and “baby hairs” because my hair was being pulled so hard every day. The hair at my windows peak was so broken that if I did wear my hair down at all it looked like I had a horn sticking out of my forehead. So, what is a clueless 13-year-old girl to do? Cut them as close to the scalp as possible of course!
You can imagine that it took me a very long hair to fix the damage I caused from doing that.
Fast forward a few years and I had finally learned how to use a flat iron correctly. I would straighten my hair or curl it with my flat iron practically every single day. In college, I started blow drying my hair each time I washed it so that it would be smoother and easier to manage in the morning. My hair was growing long and thanks to regular trims and heat protectant it had minimal damage and was looking healthy too! From 2018 through much of this year, I had worn my hair natural, in public might I add, maybe a total of five times. Everyone told me how beautiful my hair used to be and how much they missed seeing my natural curls. I had people ask me what my hair looked like naturally all the time, and when I told them it was curly or show them a photo of it, they would always gasp and say “I would kill for curly hair! How you can you always straighten it?!”
Due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, I wore my hair naturally practically the entire time I was stuck at home from mid-March to mid-May. I noticed how much healthier my hair truly was. I have always wanted to be able to wear my hair naturally in public, I was just so unhappy and unimpressed with how poofy it got as it dried. Not only that, but the top layers were also more wavy than curly with very little definition while the bottom layers had nicely defined curls. I felt like it looked ridiculous.
I had always heard really good things about Deva Curl, but knew that it was on the pricier side and thought that it might be something out of my budget. As I get older, I realize that it is okay to splurge on things that benefit your life/lifestyle. Eventually, I will be doing a review of all the food subscription services I have tried. The subscriptions are more expensive than meal planning and grocery shopping, but for someone with IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) I found it very beneficial for me to have my meals planned, fresh ingredients portioned out, and easy-to-follow recipe cards all mailed directly to my home once a week. The benefits outweigh the cost. So, I decided to buy the Deva Curl system. If I could save myself 20 minutes in the morning, and grow healthier hair that needs less trims and treatments, isn’t it worth it? I found the items I wanted to try from various sellers on eBay, which cut costs significantly.
Here is what I purchased:
Two 12 oz bottles of Deva Curl Low Poo Original Shampoo and Deva Curl One Condition Original Conditioner for $25.00.
One 5 oz bottle of Deva Curl Supermousse for $23.70.
One 5.1 oz bottle of Deva Curl Styling Cream for $12.99.
I usually use the shampoo and conditioner every other wash or so, since it is on the pricier side, and then use the mousse and styling cream in conjunction with one another on damp hair each morning. I love the look these products create; Beautiful volume, defined curls, perfect texture. I am so impressed with these products that I am literally speechless. I feel like I can’t say enough good things, and honestly, I only have two complaints.
1. I am not a fan of the scent of the conditioner. As odd as this may sound, it reminds me of urinal cakes. Not exactly a scent that I want my head and hair smelling like.
2. The styling cream is fantastic BUT I have to keep it away from the root, especially at the front of my face, because it makes my hair look greasy.
Despite the styling cream being a bit greasy looking at the root, it is my favorite product out of all four. As your hair dries, you may notice a section of hair that you missed applying mousse or styling cream to, or maybe you accidentally ran your hair through it too many times, causing it to poof and lose definition. I have found it extremely easy to take your fingers and use water to get the section of hair wet, and then take a small pump of the styling cream and manipulate the hair to create the shape you want.
These products make it easy and nearly effortless to wear your curly hair in all its natural glory. I am so glad I decided to take the chance and try them out, and I really hope that any other women (or maybe even men) struggling with loving their natural hair takes this as a sign to try it out. I have to say, I have a whole different attitude now when people compliment my hair. Now, I know it looks good, and when people ask what I have been doing differently, I say “girl, its Deva Curl!”
