Ever since enjoying my very first one at The Whistling Kettle years ago, I have always had a soft spot for crepes. In 2018 when Nomad Coffee and Crepes opened, I was so excited to have another place to enjoy crepes, and one with a bar at that! I'll admit, I got slightly distracted and it took me two years to finally get my butt in the door. This was an experience I was really excited for, and it hurts me to say that everything about my experience was a complete let down.
We sat down at a high-top table. Those red chairs may look great against the barnwood and weathered metals, but they are NOT comfortable... maybe for those with smaller backsides but not for this girl. I'm not sure if it's because our waitress had zero social skills, but she seemed completely clueless. Nomad specializes in "Pour Over" coffee, which we were curious on how it compared to regularly brewed coffee i.e., caffeine content, flavor, etc.. The only explanation she could provide us was "that's what 'so-and-so' is doing at the bar." I decided to settle with the complementary water, which I realized after drinking about half of the glass, that it had something floating around the bottom of the glass. I then started taking note of how dirty everything else was around me.
When we finally ordered food, I got the Marion Bloom, which is supposed to have strawberry filling, sliced bananas and chocolate spread. The presentation was gorgeous so I was really excited to taste all the flavors. The crepe itself was slightly overcooked, to the point where I couldn't cut it with just the fork that I was given without heavy pressure... and I mean heavy. As for the contents of the crepe, there wasn't very much inside; A few strawberry slices and a few banana slices. It was mostly crepe and not so much filling which was not so exciting considering I had high expectations for this crepe! Nonetheless, I finished it because I'm really not one to let food go to waste, even if it wasn't what I was expecting. I could argue that it was most certainly not worthy of an $8 price tag.
The service was extremely slow, which is surprising because there are only two high-tops, one four-top (with two guests), and three or four seats at the bar. After finishing our food, we waited quite a while for the check and it wasn't until the cook came out from the kitchen in the back to help that we got it. I couldn't get out of there fast enough. It's such a shame because Nomad is in such a great location and could be the perfect café to grab a coffee and a bite with a friend but between the service, the food, and the dirty environment I can confidently say that I will not be returning. Looks like The Whistling Kettle is still at the top of my list!
